FRANKFURT -- German printed circuit board manufacturers' sales rose 4.2% year-over-year in May as the sector enjoyed its strongest month in three years.

Orders fell 0.5% compared with 2013, but grew 12% sequentially.

Year to date sales are up 3.7%, said ZVEI, the Central Association of the PCB and Electronic Systems, while orders are up 8%.

It was highest sales volume since in May 2011.

The book-to-bill ratio was 1.04, meaning 104 euros worth of boards were ordered for every 100 euros worth that shipped during the month.

Medium-sized companies, defined as having annual sales between 20 and 50 million euros, were the most successful in May, ZVEI said.

Headcount increased 2.6%.
