FRAMINGHAM, MA – Worldwide PC shipments climbed 2.3% year-over-year in the third quarter, IDC said this week.
The increase is an improvement over first- and second-quarter drops of 6.8% and 2.4% respectively.
“With the forthcoming launch of Windows 7 and expected commercial refresh beginning in 2010, the prospects for future PC market growth are very solid,” says Bob O’Donnell, vice president of Clients and Displays at IDC.
Portable PCs continue to experience the majority of volume and growth, but netbooks are making considerable contributions.
Four of the top five vendors, Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba, showed year-over-year growth. Although Dell had solid growth in emerging markets, it still saw a drop worldwide. All regions, except Japan, met or improved forecasts.
