OYSTER BAY, NY – Handset shipments for the second quarter reaches 269 million units, with increases expected for the remainder of the year, reports
ABI Research.
“Shipments should build sequentially in a constructive manner with fourth-quarter 2009 potentially returning the industry to better sales form,” says Jake Saunders, vice president for forecasting.
ABI has revised its forecast for the year from 8.1% to 7.5%, as stimulus packages and predicted increases in second-half sales are helping Asian markets.
For the quarter, Samsung Electronics’ market share increased 1.45 percentage points to 19.4%, with LG Electronics up 2.2 percentage points to 11.1%. Nokia posted an impressive 1.67-percentage point jump to 38.3%.
Smartphones continue to be a main player in market growth, with benefits felt by both Tier 1 and Tier 3 vendors including Apple, High Tech Computer, Huawei Technologies and ZTE. “While a consolidation is widely expected in the industry, it will not be happening in 2009,” says Kevin Burden, practice director for ABI.
