SCHAUMBURG, IL - Motorola
and Nortel Networks are in negotiations to combine their wireless
infrastructure units, according to reports.
Quoting industry
sources, The Wall Street Journal reported that by combining businesses that
make network equipment for wireless phone carriers, the merger could create a
joint venture with sales around $10 billion.
Motorola
said in January it was exploring strategic options for the future of its
handset division, which could possibly include selling the unit, but the newspaper
reported that the company’s talks with Nortel were separate from any future
plans for its handset unit.
The Journal reports that Motorola
and Nortel were not available for comment.
