MILPITAS, CA — Revenue from printed circuit board and MCM design software totaled $250.9 million in the March quarter, up 12% from a year ago, the Electronic System Design (ESD) Alliance announced today.

The four-quarter moving average for PCB and MCM, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased 14.1%.

The segment has risen in 16 of the past 17 quarters. The sales figure marks an all-time high for the segment.

Overall electronic design automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 3.5% for the period, reaching $2.7 billion. The four-quarter moving average increased 5.2%.

“The EDA industry reported increased revenue in Q1 compared to Q1 2019, in part due to strong growth in the largest product category, Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP),” said Walden C. Rhines, CEO emeritus, Mentor, in a statement. “The printed circuit board and multichip module (category also reported double-digit gains in Q1. The four-quarter moving average continued to increase for the PCB and MCM, computer-aided engineering, IC physical design and verification, and SIP categories, and in the Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific.”

Companies tracked in the report employed 45,938 workers in the quarter, up 5.6% from a year ago and up 1.1% sequentially.

For the quarter, CAE generated revenue of $854.9 million, up 1.7%. The four-quarter CAE moving average increased 2.4%. IC physical design and verification revenue fell 8.9% to $507.9 million, while the four-quarter moving average increased 2.4%. SIP revenue rose 12.5% to $985.6 million, and the four-quarter SIP moving average increased 9.6%. Services revenue totaled $98.7 million, down 8.6%, while the four-quarter Services moving average decreased 12.1%.

The Americas, the largest reporting region by revenue, purchased $1.12 billion worth of EDA products and services, up 0.5%. The four-quarter moving average for the Americas increased 0.5%. Revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) increased 13.4% to $392.3 million, while the four-quarter moving average increased 11.1%. Japan's revenue increased 9.8% to $268.6 million, while the four-quarter moving average decreased 3.9%. APAC revenue increased to $918.9 million, up 1.8%, and the four-quarter moving average increased 6.9%.
