MILPITAS, CA – Spending on new and used semiconductor equipment is expected to increase 9% in 2018 to a record high of $60 billion, says SEMI. In 2019, equipment spending (new and used) is expected to increase 5%, reaching another record high of $64 billion.

3D NAND will have the most capacity added in both 2018 and 2019, with 48% growth in 2018 and 27% growth in 2019, according to the firm.

Foundry capacity will increase 5% in 2018 and 5% in 2019.

According to SEMI, 56 construction projects are slated for 2018, with investments totaling $15 billion, up 17% year-over-year. Construction spending will reach an all-time high, with China continuing its lead at $7 billion in 2018 and more than $3 billion in 2019, shattering another record.

The majority of construction spending in 2018 will be for memory, at just under $9 billion, primarily for 3D NAND, followed by DRAM. Foundry capital spending comes in second, at $5 billion.
