WALLINGFORD, CT -- Amphenol Corp. today reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $90 million, down 11.4% from a year ago.
Sales for the quarter ended Dec. 31 were $758.3 million, up from $755.3 million in 2008, boosted by a 2% ($17.7 million) gain from currency translation. The results exceeded the high end of company guidance. Sales were up 6% sequentially, making it Amphenol's third consecutive quarter of sequential growth in sales and income. The operating income margin was 18.3%.
The sequential sales increase was driven by strengthening demand in most markets including IT and data communications equipment, military/aerospace, industrial, wireless infrastructure and automotive.
For the year, the printed circuit board and connector maker reported sales of $2.82 billion, down from $3.24 billion in 2008. Currency translation lowered sales by about $38.2 million.
Amphenol president and chief executive R. Adam Norwitt said, “While overall economic conditions remain less than certain, we believe we have seen both an improvement in demand levels as well as a stabilization of demand patterns in most markets. As such, in 2010, we expect to see a return to more traditional seasonality."
The company guided for first-quarter revenues of $735 million to $750 million.
