TAIPEI, TAIWAN – United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), the second-largest chip maker worldwide, reported second-quarter revenue fell 10.3% from last year to NT$22.63 billion (US$690 million).

Sequentially, revenue surged 108.8% from NT$10.84 billion (US$330 million).
Net profit for the quarter was NT$1.55 billion (US$47 million), compared to NT$2.39 billion (US$73 million) last year and an NT$8.1 million (US$246.6 million) net loss last quarter.

Strong consumer demand helped drive wafer shipments to 898 thousand for the quarter, with a utilization rate up to 79%.

By region, North American revenue was up 47% for the quarter, with Asia Pacific climbing 42% on increased demand from Asian fabless customers. Europe and Japan saw revenues rise 10% and 1% respectively.

UMC forecast third-quarter wafer shipments to increase 8% to 10%, with a utilization rate around 85%. The company expects a modest profit sequentially.
