TAIPEI -- DRAM availability is tightening and PC vendors in particular might start feeling the constraints, according to published reports.

Asustek is warning of spiking prices for DRAMs, and is building inventory ahead of expected shortages.

Acer chairman JT Wang recently said price inflation is likely to continue because DRAM makers are shifting manufacturing capacity to chips for smartphones, DigiTimes reported. Even Samsung, the world's largest producer of DRAMs, is considering buying chips on the market due to a capacity constraints. Samsung is also the world's top smartphone producer.

The changeover time to shift a DRAM line to a new type of chip is at least one quarter, according to Wang.
