SAN JOSE, CA – Sales of EDA tools in the fourth-quarter fell 17.7% from last year to $1318.7 million, and the moving average dropped 9.4%, on declines in CAE, PCB/MCM and IC physical design and verification, the EDA Consortium said.
 
Companies that were tracked saw fourth-quarter professional employment figures drop 0.9% year-over-year and 3.1% quarter-over-quarter. Double-digit declines occurred in all regions except Western Europe, which experienced an 8.4% drop, according to Walden Rhines, EDA Consortium chair and Mentor Graphics CEO and chairman.
 
For the quarter, computer Aided Engineering (CAE) revenue fell 24.4% over last year to $501.8 million, and the moving average dropped 12.3%. Service revenue managed to climb 24.5% to $98.9 million, while the moving average increased 19%.
 
Continuing its downward spiral from last quarter, revenue for IC physical design and verification took the biggest hit. The moving average was down 22.5%, and fourth-quarter revenue dove 32.7% to $296.5 million year-over-year.
 
PCB and MCM revenue was down 11.6% from last year to $135.9 million, but the moving average climbed slightly to 0.4%. Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) revenue totaled $285.5 million for the quarter, a 7.6% increase year-over-year. The moving average rose 2.3%.
 
Western Europe fared the best, with revenues falling only 8.4% to $290.3 million. Japan saw revenues drop 17.3% to $261.3 million, and the Rest-of-World figures declined 15.4% to $197.9 million. North America had the deepest decline, with a 22.7% fall to $569.1 million.
