BOSTON -- Global smartwatch shipments grew 250% in the first quarter over last year, thanks in large part to Samsung.

The Korean electronics giant's Galaxy Gear model has captured the lion's share of the market, says Strategy Analytics in a new report.

The company has sold more than a half million smartwatches and now holds more than 70% of the market, the research firm said.
