SANTA CLARA, CA -- Revenue for mobile displays is forecast to grow 47% this year and 19% in 2012, according to data released today by DisplaySearch.
Cellphone display revenue will top out at $22.4 billion next year, boosted by smartphone demand, the researchers said. Unit growth in 2011 will reach 1.8 billion units, the firm said.
Mobile phone display shipments reached 1.6 billion units last year, up 10.8%. Revenues were up 10.4% to $12.8 billion, as average selling prices -- $7.90 -- were flat with 2009.
DisplaySearch attributed the flat ASPs to growing emerging markets and smartphones, which push demand for higher specifications including display size, resolution and technology. “With mobile phone market growth occurring as a result of continuously growing emerging markets and the transition to smartphones, demand has increased for higher specifications, including display size, resolution, and technology,” said senior analyst Calvin Hsieh.
The fastest-growing display technology is AMOLED, which is forecast to reach 128 million units, up 191% year-over-year, in 2011 and 212 million in 2012. AMOLED revenues for mobile phone displays will reach $4 billion in 2011 and $6.4 billion in 2012, the firm said.
