SAN JOSE, CA – EDA industry first-quarter revenue fell 10.7% from last year to $1192.1 million, reports the
EDA Consortium (EDAC). The decline is primarily attributed to changes in accounting methods by Cadence Design Systems.
Although revenue dropped for the first quarter, it was still better than fourth-quarter results, according to Walden Rhines, EDA Consortium chair and CEO of Mentor Graphics.
The four-quarter moving average slipped 11.3%.
EDA revenues were down in all regions except Asia Pacific, where sales climbed 11.5% from last year to $209.4 million. The four-quarter moving average was down 4.7%. The Americas, the EDA’s largest region, saw an 11.6% drop to $494 million year-over-year; the four-quarter moving average was down 15.4%. First-quarter revenues dove 17.7% in Japan to $265.5 million, with the four-quarter moving average slipping 10.8%.
Europe, the Middle East and Africa saw revenues sink 15.9% from last year to $223.2 million, and the four-quarter moving average dipped 7.5%.
Revenues were down in all product categories except services, where sales jumped 20.4% year-over-year to $105.7 million and the four-quarter moving average climbed 24.6%.
PCB and multi-chip revenue for the quarter was $119.9 million, a 7.1% dip year-over-year. The four-quarter moving average slipped 0.6%. IC physical design and verification revenues fell 5.4% from last year to $302.2 million, with the four-quarter moving average down 21.6%.
Revenues for Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) totaled $236.3 million, down 12.8% from last year. The four-quarter moving average slipped 1.4%.
Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), the industry’s largest category, took to largest hit. First-quarter revenues sank 18.8% from last year to $427.9 million. CAE four-quarter moving average dropped 16.8%.
Companies that were tracked employed 26,561 professionals during the first quarter, down 2.8% from last year and 2.7% from last quarter.
