WALLINGFORD, CT – Amphenol Corp. reported first-quarter sales fell 14% from last year to $660 million.

The company blamed currency exchange expenses for 3% ($23.1 million) of the drop.

For the quarter ended March 31, profits dropped 22%. Net income was $77.1 million, down from $99.1 million in 2008. The operating income margin was 16.8%.

Poor sales were attributed to low demand in the automotive, industrial and information technology and data communications equipment markets, offset partially by increases in global wireless communications markets, especially China.

At the end of the quarter, Amphenol completed the purchase of Times Microwave Systems.

The company guided for second-quarter revenues of $660 million to $675 million.
