MILPITAS, CA – Sales of design software for printed circuit boards and multichip modules increased 5.9% year-over-year to $200.7 million in the third quarter 2018. The four-quarters moving average for PCB and MCM tools increased 9.7%.
PCB tool revenue was up 30% in Asia/Pacific region, said Wally Rhines, CEO emeritus of Mentor and member of the Electronic System Design (ESD) Alliance Governing Council, in an interview with PCD&F.
"PCB has remained strong, but a particular highlight was the four-quarters moving average was almost 10% and Pac Rim was incredibly strong. The strongest parts year-to-year were the traditional ones -- PCB schematic and physical layout, and reasonably strong growth in package design as well," he said. Electronic design automation (EDA) revenue increased 6.7% in the quarter to $2.4 billion. The four-quarters moving average increased 8.4%.
“The EDA industry continues to report growth, with all major product categories and geographic regions reporting revenue increases,” said Rhines. “Geographically, the Americas reported the largest regional increase for the third quarter, followed closely by Asia Pacific.”
Tracked companies employed 42,162 professionals in the third quarter, up 8% year-over-year and 1.1% sequentially.
Computer-aided engineering generated revenue of $756.6 million during the period, an increase of 5.6% compared to the same quarter in 2017. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 10.1%.
IC physical design and verification revenue was $475.8 million, a 3.9% increase year-over-year. The four-quarters moving average increased 10.2%.
Semiconductor intellectual property revenue totaled $883.5 million, up 8.8% year-over-year. The four-quarters moving average increased 5.9%.
Services revenue was $119.1 million, up 11.3%. The four-quarters moving average increased 5.6%.
The Americas, EDA’s largest region, purchased $1.06 billion of EDA products and services in the third quarter, an increase of 7.4%. The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 11.8%. Revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) increased 5.5% on revenues of $350.8 million. The EMEA four-quarters moving average was up 6.9%. Revenue from Japan was up 4.1% to $242 million. The four-quarters moving average grew 5.8%. Asia/Pacific (APAC) revenue increased to $782.9 million, up 7% year-over-year. The four-quarters moving average increased 5.1%.
