INDIANAPOLIS – A quartet of researchers has published a new book describing the lifecycles of electronics parts and software, and explaining processes of obsolescence forecasting, and reactive, proactive, and strategic management of obsolescence.
Strategies to the Prediction, Mitigation, and Management of Product Obsolescence, by Bjoern Bartels, Ulrich Ermel, Dr. Peter Sandborn and Dr. Michael Pecht, covers fundamental issues related to product obsolescence. The authors detail obsolescence forecasting methodologies for both hardware and software; provide case studies illustrating different applications of obsolescence forecasting; and discuss all phases of a component’s lifecycle; part change and discontinuation management; reactive, proactive, and strategic obsolescence management approaches, and obsolescence management standards and organizations.
Bartels is a senior consultant and obsolescence management competence lead with a master's degree in international business and a German diploma in industrial engineering and business management. Ermel is head of the department of Materials and Obsolescence Management at TQ Systems and chairman of the Component Obsolescence Group in Germany. Sandborn is a professor of mechanical engineering in the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering at the University of Maryland, and Pecht is chair professor of mechanical engineering and director of CALCE.
