TAIPEI -- Taiwanese printed circuit board fabricators are expected to grow 8.4% year-on-year to NT$545 billion (US$18.1 billion) in 2012, boosted by demand for smartphones and other handheld devices.
The report, from the according to the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Research Center, part of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, isn't explicit, but includes production by Taiwanese PCB manufacturers located in mainland China. The data are in line with the forecast by Dr. Hayao Nakahara of NT Information earlier this year. It's an improvement from the 3% growth forecast by IEK for 2011.
IEK pointed to expected demand for smartphones, tablet and other PCs for the anticipated gains. Demand for HDI boards, a Taiwan strength, grew 9.2% sequentially in the third quarter to reach NT$135.2 billion (US$4.5 billion).
