TAOYUAN, TAIWAN – Unimicron Technology Corp. reported second-quarter net profit of NT$1.05 billion (US$32 million) compared to a net loss of NT$15 million (US$460,000) last quarter.
 
For the quarter, consolidated revenues were NT$10.57 billion (US$321 million) on an increase in demand in consumer electronics and notebook products. The company reported a gross margin of 18%, the highest in six quarters.

The telecom sector brought in the largest revenue at 46%, while integrated circuits contributed 24%. Consumer electronics and notebook segments brought in 21% and 8% of revenues respectively.
 
Utilization was nearly 90% for the quarter, and the company shipped 70 million units of cell phone relevant boards, compared to 52 million units last quarter.
 
Unimicron spent NT$1.8 billion (US$54.7 million) in PCB and substrate expansion for the first half of 2009. Based on the economy's performance, the company may revise its capex to NT$2.5 billion to $3 billion (US$76 million to $91 million).
