CRANE, IN – Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division was recognized before an international audience for its contributions to the electronics industry with the IPC Peter Sarmanian Corporate Recognition Award.
The award was presented to NSWC Crane representatives at the annual IPC Apex Expo in San Diego on Jan. 29.
The IPC Peter Sarmanian Corporate Recognition Award honors an IPC member that has actively improved the printed circuit board industry while participating in technical and/or management programs.
NSWC Crane is the first government entity to receive this award, which began in 2007 and has been awarded to companies such as Lockheed Martin (2013) and Raytheon (2014).
“For more than 30 years, NSWC Crane has been both an IPC member and leader in printed circuit technology and trusted and assured microelectronics,” says Craig Herndon, Program Manager for the DoD Executive Agent for Printed Circuit Board and Interconnect Technology. “NSWC Crane serves as the Department of Defense (DoD) Executive Agent (EA) Technical Lead for Printed Circuit Board and Interconnect Technologies. As the EA, Crane represents the DoD and serves as technical expert to ensure DoD access to trusted and affordable electronic interconnect technology necessary for critical national defense system and warfighter superiority.”
The Defense Department requires electronics to be long-life products to work flawlessly in rigorous environments. Counterfeit and unreliable electronics impact commercial industries, as well as defense. Roger Smith, Technical Lead for the DoD EA at NSWC Crane and NAVSEA Technical Warrant Holder for Electronics, says that through defense participation in IPC, this expertise expands to benefit the private sector.
“If we can drive international standards toward defense requirements where it makes sense, overall quality and reliability in electronics increases,” says Smith. “This award is an indicator that we’ve positively impacted the industry and that we have not only exhibited national leadership, but international leadership here at Crane. It is exciting to be recognized for our efforts over the years.”
NSWC Crane personnel also met with global electronics experts during the IPC APEX EXPO event and updated them on EA activities, provided them with info on some of the latest Government initiatives impacting the Defense Industrial Base, and provided them with a venue to voice issues and concerns.
NSWC Crane is a naval laboratory and a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) with mission areas in Expeditionary Warfare, Strategic Missions and Electronic Warfare.
