SAN JOSE -- Printed circuit board and multichip module design software sales rose 19.5% from last year to $167 million in the December quarter.

Overall electronic design automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 4.6% to $1.78 billion. Sequentially, revenue rose 9.8%, the EDA Consortium (EDAC) announced today. The four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased 6.7%.

The four-quarters moving average for PCB & MCM increased 7.6%.

"The EDA industry finished 2012 with a record quarter," said Wally Rhines, EDAC spokesman and chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics. "CAE, IP and PCB were all strong, with PCB ... more than double that of any other major category. Geographically, all of the regions reported positive growth, with the Europe/Middle East/Africa region leading the way."

Companies that were tracked employed 29,578 professionals, up 7.1% from 2011 and up 2.4% sequentially.

By category, computer-aided engineering generated revenue of $693 million, up 7.5% from 2011. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 9.8%. IC Physical Design & Verification revenue decreased 8.2% to $360.4 million, while the four-quarters moving average increased 2.2%. Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) revenue totaled $467.4 million, up 8.1%, and four-quarters moving average increased 7.7%. Services revenue was up 50 basis points to $91.3 million, and the four-quarters moving average decreased 3%.

By region, sales to the Americas rose 5.6% to $767.1 million. Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) was up 8.1% to $331 million. Japan rose 4.4% to $259.1 million, and Asia/Pacific (APAC) region revenue increased 50 basis points to $421.8 million.
