SANTA CLARA, CA – The three leading PCB computer-aided design vendors for 2009 were Mentor Graphics, Zuken and Cadence, a leading analyst says.

GarySmithEDA’s data show Mentor in the top spot, followed by Zuken with a 23% share worldwide. Cadence is No. 3, according to the data.

By individual software suite, however, Zuken may be the leader. Its PCB sales were $117 million for the fiscal year ended March 2010, with CR5000 by far its leading product. “We think CR5000 has the most revenue and number of users versus all other single packages,” Zuken’s Steve Chidster told PCD&F in late February.

In overall EDA sales, which includes IC design software, the top four for 2009 were, in order, Synopsys, Cadence, Mentor and Zuken. Smith tracks over 80 EDA suppliers in his rankings.

For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2010, the top four by revenue were Synopsys ($1.35 billion), Cadence ($852 million), Mentor ($773 million) and Zuken ($184 million). Cadence and Mentor generated more than 40% of their sales during the period in North America, while Zuken’s share was 5%.

The final 2010 data are not yet available.
