SAN JOSE -- Cadence Design Systems swung to a net loss of $21 million from net income of $2 million in 2009.

The EDA software company's fourth-quarter revenue rose 13.2% from a year ago to $249 million.

Revenue for fiscal 2010 totaled $936 million, up 9.7% from a year ago. Net income 142 million, including a $148 million income tax benefit related to an IRS settlement and a $67 million acquisition-related income tax benefit, compared to a net loss of $150 million in 2009.

"The Cadence team delivered a strong performance in the fourth quarter. Revenue, operating margin and cash flow all improved in the period and fiscal year 2010. Throughout the year, we strengthened key customer and partner relationships by demonstrating our technology leadership and delivering superior solutions to their complex challenges," said Lip-Bu Tan, president and chief executive officer.

The company, which makes software for printed circuit board and semiconductor design, guided for first-quarter revenue of $255 million to $265 million and a GAAP net loss. For the full year, the company expects total revenue of $1.03 billion to $1.07 billion.
