Schramberg / Munich - May 6, 2019 - Schweizer Electronic AG and Infineon Technologies have developed a new technology for mild hybrid vehicles: the chip embedding of power MOSFETs. The technology significantly increases the performance of 48V systems while reducing their complexity.
Continental Powertrain has now become the first user to use this technology.
"Chip embedding of power MOSFETs opens up completely new possibilities for the electrification of mild hybrid vehicles," says Dr. Rolf Merte, CEO at Schweizer Electronic. "The fact that one of the world's leading automotive suppliers chose our technology underscores its potential." In chip embedding, the power MOSFETs are not soldered to boards as before, but integrated into them.
"The associated thermal benefits enable significantly higher power density, and more reliable systems are possible with embedded chips" says Dr. Frank Findeis, responsible for Infineon's automotive MOSFETs business.
"The bottom line is that system designers can increase the performance of a 48V system or design it more cost-effectively." Continental Powertrain uses the technology in a 48V starter generator for vehicles of a major European car manufacturer. "Through chip embedding, we can increase performance by 60 percent compared to a conventionally designed system," says Dietmar Vogt, System Technical Project Leader at Continental Powertrain.
48V starter generators make a significant contribution to the fact that Mild Hybrid vehicles emit up to around 15 percent less CO2 than with conventional powertrains. With them, the engine can stop more often and longer than with a 12 V start-stop system. In addition, they can reduce the load of the internal combustion engine by boosting when accelerating. When braking, they recuperate more kinetic energy than a 12V system. Infineon contributes its leading OptiMOS (TM) 5 MOSFET technology to the new approach, with Swiss embedding Smart p² Pack (R) technology. The partners plan to start mass production in 2021.
