SAN JOSE -- Sales of printed circuit board and multichip module design software tools rose 20.3% from a year ago to $178.4 million in the second quarter.
The four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, for PCB & MCM increased 9%, said the EDA Consortium, which tracks the data.
Overall industry revenue during the June quarter increased 6.3% from a year ago and 0.7% sequentially to $175.8 billion, while the four quarters moving average increased 5.8%, EDAC said.
"Double-digit increases in PCB/MCM and Semiconductor IP led the way to an overall increase in industry revenue for Q2," said Wally Rhines, board sponsor for the EDAC MSS and chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics. "Geographically, all regions except Japan had solid revenue increases."
Companies that were tracked employed 31,259 professionals, up 6.7% from last year and up 2.7% from the first quarter.
The largest category, Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), generated revenue of $599.7 million, down 1.9% from 2013. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 2.7%. IC Physical Design & Verification revenue decreased 4.8% to $357.9 million, while the four-quarters moving average increased 2.4%. Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) revenue jumped 23.2% to $532 million and the four-quarters moving average increased 12.3%.
Services revenue was $89.9 million, an increase of 4.3%. The four-quarters moving average increased 3.8%.
The Americas, EDA's largest region, purchased $794.4 million of EDA products and services, up 11.2% compared to 2013. The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 8.3%. Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) was up 3.5% to $290.4 million. The EMEA four-quarters moving average increased 4%.
Japan was the outlier, decreasing 16.6% to $189.2 million. The four-quarters moving average for Japan decreased 11.1 percent.
The Asia/Pacific (APAC) region revenue increased 12.1% to $484 million, and its four-quarters moving average increased 13%.
