REDWOOD CITY, CA -- Printed circuit board and multichip module design software revenue inched up 2.4% year-over-year to $169.9 million in the first quarter. 

The four-quarters moving average for the segment, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased 13.3%, the Electronic System Design (ESD) Alliance Market Statistics Service announced today.

 Overall electronic design automation industry revenue increased 10.5% to $2,168 billion. The four-quarters moving average rose 10.6%.

"The EDA industry reported double-digit growth in the quarter, led by gains in the two largest categories, CAE and Semiconductor IP," said Walden C. Rhines, board sponsor for the ESD Alliance MSS and president and CEO of Mentor. "The two largest regions, Americas and Asia-Pacific, also reported double-digit growth in the quarter."

Companies that were tracked employed 37,195 professionals, an increase of 7.8% compared to the 34,519 people employed a year ago and up 2.2% sequentially.

Computer-aided engineering generated revenue of $707.4 million, up 14.1%. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 9.3%. IC Physical Design & Verification revenue rose 5.4% to $396 million. The four-quarters moving average increased 8.7%. Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) revenue totaled $790.5 million, a 14.8% increase. The four-quarters moving average increased 14.3%.

Services revenue fell 7.2% to $103.6 million. The four-quarters moving average decreased 1.3%.

The Americas, EDA's largest region, purchased $960.7 million of EDA products and services in the March period, an increase of 11.3%. The four-quarters moving average increased 8.7%. Revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) increased 6.2% to $307.8 million. The four-quarters moving average increased 5.9%. First quarter 2017 revenue from Japan decreased 0.3% to $233.7 million. The four-quarters moving average increased 9.2%. The Asia/Pacific (APAC) region revenue increased 15.7% to $665.2 million. The four-quarters moving average increased 16.6%.
