DUBLIN — Global flexible circuit board production is forecast to grow 12% this year to $10.68 billion, according to a new research report.

Driven by consumer demand for ultra-thin electronics, coupled with a spike in tablet PC orders, flex circuit sales rose 17% last year to $9.57 billion, says Research and Markets.

For the past three years, flex sales have been far outpacing growth from rigid printed circuit boards. Flex sales were up 21% year-over-year to $8.19 billion in 2010. Rigid sales are expected to grow 4 to 6% this year, according to most forecasts.

Research and Markets points to tablet and other PCs, mobile phones, touch screens and other similar products as drivers both for demand and higher ASPs.
