VIENNA, AUSTRIA -- AT&S and Solland Solar will build a prototype line for photovoltaic modules as part of an ongoing technology partnership.

The construction of the line, which is scheduled to be completed by this summer, marks a "significant milestone" on the road to commercial availability later this year, the companies said.

The partnership between AT&S and Solland Solar is based on joint development and ramp of back-contact module technology for the patented Sunweb cells, a technology that uses processes and materials standard in printed circuit board development but not yet applied in photovoltaics.

To date, Solland Solar’s solar cell technology has been combined with AT&S interconnection and switching technology, and reportedly all components and production processes have been developed for use in volume production. The next phase calls for construction of a joint prototype production line at AT&S’s Leoben-Hinterberg plant in Austria, scheduled for completion by this summer.

Other objectives include further optimization of the production process and certification under IEC 61215 and IEC 61730. Selected reference projects are being implemented in parallel, to highlight the new technology's cost-effectiveness and advantages in practical operation.
