TOKYO -- Hitachi Chemical Co., a longtime leader in the development of electronic materials, is officially no more. Effective Oct. 1, the company has changed its name to Showa Denko Materials Co., reflecting the latter's acquisition of the venerable Japanese firm.

The move finalizes a decision made at Hitachi's annual general shareholders' meeting on Jun. 23.

A subsidiary of Showa Denko K.K. acquired Hitachi Chemical on Apr. 28, 2020, at which point it became a consolidated subsidiary. Subsequently, Hitachi Chemical Group decided to change the name of the company to promote its corporate brand as a member of the Showa Denko Group.

The name change has not yet affected all Hitachi Group companies, some of which will change their names at later dates.
