BEAVERTON, OR – Electro Scientific Industries sold to MKS Instruments for $1 billion in cash, according to reports.

It is unclear what will become of the 220 employees at ESI’s Oregon location.

"We believe this combination will provide significant value for ESI's customers, as well as create exciting opportunities for our employees," said ESI CEO Michael Burger, in a statement.

ESI’s sales in its fiscal second quarter were $85.9 million, up 21% year-over-year and down 22.3% sequentially.

ESI designs and manufacturers laser drills for rigid and flex PCBs, among other products.
