SAN JOSE — Printed circuit board and multichip module design software sales dipped 5.4% in the third quarter, bucking an overall rise in demand for electronic design automation tools.
PCB and MCM sales totaled $125.7 million for the period, said the EDA Consortium. The four-quarter moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, decreased 1.8%.
Overall EDA revenue rose 11.9% to $1.31 billion. Sequentially, EDA revenue increased 6.9%, while the four-quarter moving average increased 4.9%.
“Third-quarter results represent a significant increase compared to 2009, with double-digit increases in CAE, IC Physical Design & Verification, and SIP,” said Wally Rhines, EDAC chair and chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics. “Geographically, the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa, and Asia/Pacific regions all had double-digit increases relative to 2009. The Americas, Japan, and the Asia/Pacific region also increased sequentially.”
Employment among participating companies rose 1.9% sequentially and 2.1% year-over-year to 26,474.
Computer-aided engineering generated revenue of 512.8 million, up 13.9% over the same period in 2009. The four-quarter moving average for CAE increased 4.5%.
IC physical design and verification revenue increased 11.8% to $291.6 million. The four-quarter moving average increased 0.1%.
Semiconductor intellectual property (SIP) revenue totaled $298.5 million, a 24% increase from last year. The four-quarter moving average increased 21.1%.
Services revenue was $78.5 million for the quarter, down 6%.
The Americas, EDA’s largest region, purchased $577.2 million of EDA products and services, up 12.9% year-over-year. The four-quarter moving average for the Americas increased 3.1%. Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) was up 9.9% to $224.3 million. The EMEA four-quarter moving average was flat. Japan fell 7.1% to $231.2 million, while its four-quarter moving average slid 6%. Asia/Pacific revenue increased to $274.3 million, a 34.6% rise. The four-quarter moving average increased 28.9%.
