WASHINGTON – The Alliance for Auto Innovation is petitioning for the US government help in boosting semiconductor availability, asserting the current shortage could result in ongoing factory disruptions that could result in more than 1.25 million fewer vehicles being built this year.

The trade group, in a letter to the US Commerce Department, asked for dedicated funding in a proposed bill to expand US semiconductor production to the auto sector.

US President Joe Biden seeks $37 billion in new government funding for chip manufacturing.

AAI CEO John Bozzella says some funding should “be used to build new capacity that will support the auto industry and mitigate the risks to the automotive supply chain evidenced by the current chip shortage. “[A] particular percentage – that is reasonably based on the projected needs of the auto industry – [could] be allocated for facilities that will support the production of auto grade chips in some manner,” he wrote.
