NEW YORK – The copper-clad laminate market grew 7.1% year-over-year in 2014 to 760 million m2.  Production in China accounted for 68.4% of the global total, says ResearchInChina.

Glass-fabric-base CCL made up 61.4% of China’s output, while paper-based CCL accounted for 16.5% of China's total in 2014.

The Chinese CCL market is highly concentrated, with CR5 in the CCL industry standing at 68% in 2014, according to the research firm.

Among Chinese-based suppliers, Kingboard Chemical ranked first, with a market share of 29.3%, followed by Shengyi Technology (14.8%) and ITEQ Corp. (9.3%).

The CCL industry has entered a new round of growth in recent years, and two regions in Asia – China and Southeast Asia – have become the fastest-growing ones.

The demand has led suppliers to invest in new capacity and, in some cases, consolidation. In August, Shengyi Technology announced a capital increase of $78.4 million into its holding subsidiary Shengyi Technology (Suzhou) Co. to meet the latter's demand for building 11 million m2 CCL and 24 million m2 of bonding sheets.

In August, Guangdong Chaohua Technology Co. acquired a 51% stake in Zhuhai ATEM Electronic Technology Co., which specializes in flexible CCL.

Meanwhile, phase one of Goldenmax International Technology’s CCL and prepreg production line was completed last October, while phase two was completed and placed in operation in April.
