WASHINGTON -- The president and CEO of the semiconductor industry's leading trade group is calling on the US Congress to support a controversial trade agreement with Asia.

“As Congress returns to Washington this week, we urge policymakers to work together to advance initiatives that promote growth and innovation in the semiconductor industry and throughout the US economy,” said John Neuffer, the top executive of the Semiconductor Industry Association. “One such measure is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a landmark agreement that would tear down barriers to trade with Pacific-Rim countries. Congress should do what’s right for US businesses, consumers, and our economy and approve the TPP.”

TPP is one of several trade agreements that have come under fire during the US presidential race as having possible negative repercussions for American workers. TPP eliminates more than 18,000 taxes and other trade barriers between the US and the other signatories. It is awaiting ratification by the US Congress.
