RoHS Amendments Calling for BFRs Ban Could be Dropped

BRUSSELS – European Parliament member and RoHS rapporteur Jill Evans announced plans to drop amendments calling for a ban of all brominated flame retardants, including those such as tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA), that have been found safe under European Union risk assessment.

The decision comes on the heels of an persistent back-and-forth in the media by supporters and opponents of the amendments.

Some trade groups rejoiced at the news. IPC, which has dismissed calls for eliminating BFRs, issues a press statement claiming victory.

Members of the European Parliament Environmental Committee are scheduled to vote on final amendments to RoHS on June 2.

A Rapporteur is a discussion leader. Evans is also a member of the Green Party.
