NEW YORK -- Noted investor Carl Icahn is continuing to acquire shares in EDA companies, but this time he is focusing on Cadence.

Icahn Capital LP, Icahn's hedge fund, bought some 2.86 million shares of Cadence during the last quarter, according to a required US Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The total gives him about a 1% share of the company.

Icahn Capital already owns 12.9 million shares of Mentor Graphics, Cadence's biggest rival in the PCB design software space. As of August, Icahn and his hedge fund had raised their combined stake in Mentor to more than 16 million shares in Mentor, prompting the company to launch a poison pill proviso.
