EL SEGUNDO, CA -- OEMs will spend $265.2 billion on semiconductors in 2013, up 4.2% from 2012, according to new data from IHS iSuppli.

The rate will accelerate through year-end, with spending reaching its highest point in six years.

The growth will carry over into next year as well, the research firm says, with 2014 sales rising 5.4% to $279.4 billion.

Excluding internal chip consumption, the served available market for semiconductor spending will be $241.3 billion in 2013, iSuppli said.

Apple and Samsung will be the leading OEM component buyers, followed by HP, Lenovo, Sony, Dell, Cisco, Panasonic, Toshiba and Asustek Computer, the firm said. "Depending on the metric used, either Samsung or Apple will be the top chip spender for 2013," said Myson Robles-Bruce, senior analyst for semiconductor spend & design activity at IHS. "Either way, the honor does not merely signify bragging rights but also carries attendant overtones of prestige and influence, with the incumbent leader often tacitly acknowledged by all others as the industry's top semiconductor spender."
