STAMFORD, CT – Hewlett-Packard (HP) has strengthened its lead in the global PC market, reeling in 19.8% of worldwide shipments for the first quarter, according to
Gartner Inc.
Overall, worldwide shipments dropped 6.5% year-over-year, to 67.2 million units. Despite the decline, HP experienced growth rates above the regional averages in not only the US and Europe, but also the Middle East, Africa and Asia/Pacific.
Claiming top position in the US market, a title it hasn’t held since 2001, HP claimed 21% of PC shipments for the first quarter, says Gartner. For the quarter, US shipments fell 0.3% year-over-year to 15.3 million units.
Finishing the quarter in second place, Dell accounted for 13.1% of global shipments, hindered by its strong reliance on the professional market segment.
Separated by only 0.1 percentage points, Acer saw shipments increase on lower priced mobile PCs and strong retail presence. The company took in 13% of shipments for the quarter.
Although Gartner reports signs of channel inventory restocking, it is cautious to announce a recovery in PC end-user demand. While mobile PCs continue to fuel growth in most regions, it is forecasting a sharp decline in revenues on lower ASPs, according to Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.
