MILPITAS, CA – Second quarter sales of printed circuit board and multichip module design software were up 5.6% year-over-year to $224.3 million. The four-quarters moving average which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased 7.1%, according to the Electronic System Design Alliance Market Statistics Service.
Overall electronic design automation industry revenue increased 6.6% year-over-year to nearly $2.5 billion. The four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased 6%, the ESDA said.
“The EDA industry reported increased revenue in the second quarter compared to the second quarter of 2018, including double-digit growth in the semiconductor IP category and Asia/Pacific region,” said Walden C. Rhines, CEO emeritus of Mentor. “Longer term, the four-quarter moving average increased for all categories except services.”
Tracked companies employed 44,342 professionals during the period, up 6.3% year-over-year and 1.9% sequentially.
Computer-aided engineering (CAE) generated revenue of $793.8 million, down 3.2% compared to the second quarter last year. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 5.7%.
IC physical design and verification revenue was $500.1 million, up 7.1%. The four-quarters moving average increased 3.6%. Semiconductor intellectual property revenue totaled $835 million in the second quarter, up 19.7%. The four-quarters moving average increased 8.5%. Services revenue was $98.9 million, a decrease of 4%. The four-quarters moving average decreased 2%.
The Americas, EDA’s largest region, purchased $1.03 billion of EDA products and services in the second quarter, a decrease of 5.5% year-over-year. The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 0.2%. Revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa increased 0.9% on revenues of $358.9 million. The EMEA four-quarters moving average decreased 1.1%. Revenue from Japan decreased 10.1% to $220.7 million. The four-quarters moving average decreased 2.3%. Asia/Pacific region revenue increased to $855.1 million, up 23.7%. The four-quarters moving average increased 13.9%.
