CLEVELAND -- OM Group's first-quarter revenue rose 9% over last year on broad volume end-market growth, particularly in semiconductors and printed circuit boards.

Revenue for the quarter was $331.3 million, the firm said last night. Net income was $30.7 million, up 36% from 2010. Operating profit rose 18%, raising margins to 11.4% of sales.

The company's Advanced Materials segment reported revenue rose 6%. Specialty chemicals sales were up 5% year-over-year and 10% sequentially on overall market strength, supply chain replenishment, and market share gains. Volumes for the PCB market were flat sequentially and up 7% year-over-year on higher demand for LCDs and smartphones. Electronic chemicals and related markets saw very strong demand, with overall volumes of electronic plating chemicals up 3% sequentially and 5% over the prior year.

For the current quarter, OMG expects PCB volumes to be flat to down slightly sequentially, and due to uncertainties in the supply chain related to Japan, plating chemical volumes to be down approximately 5% over the next two quarters.
