SAN JOSE -- Samsung this week will start construction on a 1.1 million sq. ft. research and development campus here, its largest outside of Seoul, Korea.

The campus will include a 10-story main building featuring a glass design, connected garages and secondary buildings, and areas for exercising, dining areas and walking. The firm expects some 2,000 workers will eventually be located at the building.

The architectural firm in charge of the project said about the design: "A central campus green space unifies the whole campus much like a traditional academic campus."

In a press release, Samsung said, "Clearly, a critical part of our expanding identity needs to be housed in the US. We looked at Silicon Valley and states beyond California as possibilities, but when all when all was said and done, we selected Silicon Valley as a much larger home base for housing some of the best minds in the country."

The campus is expected to be finished by mid 2015.
