KiCad version 6.0.0 features a refreshed user interface designed to reduce the barriers of entry for new users and ease friction when switching between KiCad and other design software.
Visual design language, hotkeys, dialog layouts, and editing workflows have been harmonized so that it no longer feels like two different tools when switching between the schematic and PCB editors. Schematic editor now uses same object selection and manipulation paradigm as PCB editor. Upgrades include ability to assign net classes from within the schematic editor; apply line color and style rules to wires and buses individually or based on net class; and create buses that group together multiple signals with different names for easier hierarchical design.
New schematic and symbol library file format is based on format used for KiCad board and footprint files. Enables long-desired features such as embedding symbols used in a schematic directly in the schematic file, so cache libraries are no longer needed. PCB editor has had a complete look and feel upgrade, featuring many new options to help navigate complicated designs. Saves and restores custom view presets. Hides certain nets from the rats nest. Controls opacity of zones, pads, vias, and traces independently. Sets colors for specific nets and net classes, and applies those colors to the rats nest or to all the copper attached to that net. New Selection Filter panel controls types of objects to be selected.
