SAN JOSE — Sales of printed circuit board and multichip module design software fell 0.1% year-over-year in the third quarter to $162.2 million.

The four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased 0.9%.

Overall electronic design automation revenue increased 7% for the quarter to $2.09 billion. The four-quarters moving average increased 3.7%.

The data are compiled by the Electronic System Design (ESD) Alliance, a trade group of semiconductor and PCB design software suppliers.

“The industry realized solid growth in the third quarter, with all of the geographic regions – Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Japan, and Asia/Pacific - reporting revenue increases," said Walden C. Rhines, board sponsor for the ESD Alliance MSS and chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics. “Product categories CAE, Semiconductor IP, IC Physical Design & Verification, and services all reported increases in the third quarter.”

Industry employment rose 6.2% year-over-year and 1.5% sequentially to a record 35,515 professionals in the quarter.

Computer-aided engineering generated revenue of $666.7 million in the quarter, up 5% from 2015. The four-quarters moving average for CAE decreased 1.2%. IC physical design and verification revenue was $441.3 million, up 8.2%, while the four-quarters moving average increased 2.8%.

Semiconductor intellectual property (SIP) revenue rose 10.4% to $720.9 million. The four-quarters moving average increased 10.1%. Services revenue rose 3% $102.6 millio, while the four-quarters moving average increased 2.9%.

The Americas, EDA’s largest region, purchased $932.9 million of EDA products and services in the quarter, up 3.2% from 2015. The four-quarters moving average increased 1.3%. Revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) increased 2.3% to $297 million, while the four-quarters moving average decreased 0.7%. Japan sales increased 3.9% to $213.2 million, with a four-quarters moving average up 5.5%. Asia/Pacific (APAC) revenue jumped 16.6% to $650.6 million, and its four-quarters moving average increased 9%.
