Japan H1 PWB Sales Up 8.5%

TOKYO – Japanese PWB fabricators reported first-half revenues grew 8.6% year-over-year to 494.9 billion yen ($4.3 billion). Average selling prices rose, as volumes dropped 1.4% to 12.17 million sq. m., according to Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
According to analyst Dominique Numakura, “Nothing ‘eventful’ stood out; however, new trends within certain segments are apparent.”
The second quarter did show variation from the previous three periods, Numakura noted. He said manufacturers, having switched to higher-margin products during the past year, are now more willing to increase volume and share at the risk of lower margin.
Flexible circuit volumes declined 2.7%, while revenues increased 3% during the first half. ASPs for single-sided flex were down, but remained high for double-sided and multilayers.
Rigid board results were mixed, he noted, as six-to-eight layer boards and buildup boards were 22% and 16%, respectively, while revenue and volume for boards of other layer counts fell. Double-sided was flat.
