INEMI Tin Whisker Workshop Scheduled at ECTC 2007 Print E-mail

HERNDON, VaThe International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) will hold its tin whisker workshop at the Electronic Components & Technology Conference (ECTC). Co-sponsored by ECTC and the IEEE Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology Society (CPMT), the workshop is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Reno, Nevada.
 
Tin plating has been, and continues to be, the preferred surface coating for the leads on electronic components. However, tin-based plating can be susceptible to the formation of needle-like protrusions, or whiskers, and whiskers can potentially cause significant problems. They are especially a concern for applications requiring high reliability and long useful life. The workshop will cover such topics as:
 
- Practical data on the effects of temperature and humidity on whisker formation.
- Extensive industry data collected over several years in manufacturing.
- Material considerations that either encourage or inhibit whisker formation.
- Measuring stress in tin film and the relationship of stress to whisker growth.
- Tools and methodologies for measuring stress.
- Recommendations for mitigation practices, including conformal coatings.
- Progress toward a unified theory for whisker formation.
 
“This workshop offers an excellent opportunity for industry to share the latest research and information about tin whiskers,” said Ron Gedney, chair of the workshop and an iNEMI consultant. “Our knowledge about, and understanding of, tin whiskers has come a long way since our first ECTC workshop in 2004; however, there is much more to be learned. This workshop provides an excellent forum for identifying key issues to be addressed and for focusing our efforts on common solutions.”
 
The workshop is co-chaired by Maureen Williams, mechanical engineer for NIST. Dr. Carol Handwerker, professor of materials engineering at Purdue University, and former chief of the Metallurgy Division at NIST, will serve as moderator. CSP/BallNest Socket Provides Consistant Test and Burn-In
Aries Electronics introduces the CSP/BallNest Hybrid Socket for test or burn-in of chip scale package, ball grid array, microBGA, land grid array and prototyping.
 
It can be used on any device having a pitch of 0.30 mm or larger. Features include a lid that nests each ball termination into the socket for a reliable connection and a four-point crown providing scrub on solder oxides.
 
It has a signal path of 0.0777 inches and provides minimal signal loss for higher bandwidth capability. Estimated contact life is 500,000 cycles, and the socket is available in custom materials, sizes, configurations and platings.
