Ferrari Roasted at PCB East Print E-mail

MANCHESTER, NH – Gary Ferrari thought he was invited to roast IPC’s Dieter Bergman. He even wrote some one-liners for the occasion. But Ferrari was actually the roastee at the first PCB Design Conference East Industry Icon Roast.

UP Media Group President Pete Waddell emceed Monday's luncheon event at the Radisson Hotel Manchester. The panel of roasters included Bergman; Andy Kowalewski of SyChip; Rick Hartley of L-3 Avionics Systems; and Susy Webb of Suntron Corp.

Waddell told the audience of conference attendees to visit Hartley’s Web site, www.raunchyrick.com, and that the  youthful Webb had been designing boards for 56 years.

Bergman detailed Ferrari’s practical jokes, such as luring a coworker into submitting his resignation for a nonexistent job offer. Ferrari’s nose – as well as his height, or lack of it – was a frequent target of the roasters.

Kowalewski said he couldn’t think of anything bad to say about Ferrari, whom he thanked for getting him involved in the IPC Designers Council. Webb recited a poem about Ferrari based on oldies song titles. She likened the Designers Council to Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” and Motley Crue.

Hartley noted that Ferrari is so short he can buy blue jeans on sale, for $9.99 at Kids ‘R’ Us.

“You can see Gary’s feet in the picture on his drivers license,” laughed Hartley.

But Hartley pointed out that everyone in the room owed Ferrari a debt of gratitude for his contributions to the design community and the Designers Council.

“Gary’s like Edison,” said Hartley. “He can take a good idea and make it better, like the Designers Council.”

Ferrari accepted the honors and took a jab at Hartley (“Everyone loves a big mouth”) and Waddell.

“I was thinking about giving Pete a paper bag,” Ferrari said. “To see if he could design his way out of it.”

Development Kit Test Drives Innovative Cable Assemblies
3M introduces the Shielded Controlled Impedance (SCI) Cable Assembly Development Kit, 2mm. The development kit enables users to assess, test and design high-performance, 2mm SCI cable-to-board solutions. Engineers can attain multi-gigahertz performance from 2 mm printed circuit board connectors using 2mm shielded controlled impedance cable assemblies.

The SCI connectors save board space without affecting performance. Users can verify signal integrity, impedance matching and crosstalk performance for designs requiring up to 1 Gbps single-ended performance per signal line or 5 Gbps differential performance per signal pair.

The kit contains everything needed to assess, test and design, including a CD-ROM with application note, test instruction and technical sheets.
