BEAVERTON, OR – Polar Instruments has released the Precision line gage PLG100 – designed for high repeatability optical measurement of track and via geometry. With a resolution of 0.75 microns and accuracy of 1.5 microns (0.06 mils), the PLG100 is said to be perfect for measuring the finest PCB structures and features. The PLG100 also makes automatic measurement of microvia dimensions. Illumination is provided by top lighting and a 360° high intensity white LED ringlight at PCB level. The combination of these two light sources allegedly allows measurement of both the top and base width of the PCB trace – regardless of trace orientation. PC software takes operator variation from the measurement process with automatic edge detection supposedly taking the guesswork out of the measurement. Vias, microvias and other circular features may reportedly be measured by selecting 3 points on the circumference.
If required, the PLG100 can measure against preset tolerances and save measurement data for future reference. It has a specially designed smooth base, which is said to be safe to use on film, finished boards and cores prior to lamination.
