Altium Releases Service Pack 4 for Designer

SYDNEY, Australia – Altium Limited, a developer of Windows-based electronics design software, has released Service Pack 4 (SP4) for Altium Designer, the unified application that allegedly incorporates all the technologies and capabilities necessary for complete electronic product development. It is available as a free download to existing licensed Altium Designer Nexar, Protel, CircuitStudio and CAMtastic customers.
At the PCB level, SP4 introduces real-time, 3D component clearance checking when placing parts. Designers can reportedly define the extent of components in terms of multiple areas, heights and standoffs, creating a complex 3D ‘envelope’ of the component body. Enhancements to component clearance checking rules are said to allow clearances in all directions to be monitored in real-time during placement.
“Altium Designer Service Pack 4 is yet another example of Altium’s commitment to responding to our customers needs and bringing the best and latest technology to their design desktops,” said Nick Martin, founder and CEO, Altium. “The powerful features and enhancements included in this service pack improve collaboration within design teams and make the overall electronic product development process easier and more efficient.”

Development Kit Test Drives Innovative Cable Assemblies
3M introduces the Shielded Controlled Impedance (SCI) Cable Assembly Development Kit, 2mm. The development kit enables users to assess, test and design high-performance, 2mm SCI cable-to-board solutions. Engineers can attain multi-gigahertz performance from 2 mm printed circuit board connectors using 2mm shielded controlled impedance cable assemblies. The SCI connectors save board space without affecting performance. Users can verify signal integrity, impedance matching and crosstalk performance for designs requiring up to 1 Gbps single-ended performance per signal line or 5 Gbps differential performance per signal pair. The kit contains everything needed to assess, test and design, including a CD-ROM with application note, test instruction and technical sheets. www.3m.com
