SAN JOSE, July 1 -- The
head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says outsourcing jobs helps the
economy and ultimately leads to greater domestic employment.
Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Thomas Donohue told the
Commonwealth Club of California last night that the offshoring of jobs
to low-labor-rate countries saves companies money -- which in turn goes
to create more jobs.
Amid the "jobless" recovery, the issue is a lightning rod in America
today. Several federal agencies report job migration is accelerating.
About 250,000 workers lose their jobs to offshoring each year,
according to government statistics. And in June the Bureau of Labor
Statistics revised downward projections for white-collar job growth for
2002-12, based on accelerated job migration.
According to an AP report, Donohue said "the benefits of offshoring
jobs outweigh the cost" and those affected should "stop whining."
A private organization, the Chamber of Commerce is a notoriously
partisan group that represents 3 million businesses and generally
advocates legislation that improves corporate bottom lines.
